Mentoring

A Professional Mentoring Programme for all our Young People

Many young people grow up without positive role models in their lives. Consequently, they do not have anyone to turn to for advice and guidance. Society teaches young people to have aspirations and to aim high however, society often fails in helping them to turn their dreams into reality.

We believe that young people have the power to change the world but many cannot change it alone. They need guidance and support that empowers them to reach high. This is why we launched our Mentoring Programme in 2016. Since then, it has connected numerous young people with mentors from professional or educational backgrounds. These mentors guide our young people in raising their expectations, directing their efforts, building resilience and learning key skills that underpin their future careers. Aspire 2 Succeed would like to offer this opportunity to young people throughout the Derby city and Derbyshire. Our aim is to provide a service that supports as many young people as possible.

Developmental Mentoring

We use the Developmental Mentoring model which places greater emphasis on the growth of the mentee and on learning and development. It has a broad definition of “person support in the context of continuing education” (Freeman, 1999). The mentee takes responsibility by driving the mentoring process and by participating in a two-way learning relationship.

Mentoring is now seen as a formally managed developmental process where the relationship between mentor and mentee is more equal. There is a clear contract for development where both parties are recognised and both gain from the process through their involvement.

What Our Mentees Say

A recent survey revealed that mentees find the mentor-mentee relationship is beneficial. Our mentees value the opportunity to build a healthy relationship based on mutual understanding, trust and acceptance. Discussions allow the mentees to communicate openly and share their issues. They find that this improves their communication skills in other areas of their lives.

Also, mentees value the advice and extra support with their everyday life, studies and future plans. Some mentees think the mentor advice shows them how to improve themselves and to take the next steps with their education and career choices. They also appreciate the motivation and encouragement they receive from their mentors, as well as support at school meetings with parents and teachers.

I am currently, in university of derby studying youth work, where I will learn more skills to be able to further help, with having almost over 8 years of youth work experience to build upon I hope that I will be able to help more at aspire.

Hibah Rafiq
Hi I’m Hibah! I am a volunteer with Aspire and currently a level 2 beauty student. I enjoy volunteering with young people as I appreciate how much some encouragement from teachers/mentors has helped me in my academic journey and would like to do the same for our young children. I enjoy the sense of community that has been fostered with the children making learning fun for them too !
